Tom Grandy has over 30 years experience in industry and small business. He has worked as the general manager of a service company, Regional Directory of Company Develop for the DIAL ONE franchise and is the founder and president of Grandy & Associates. The vision of Grandy & Associates is to “teach contractors how to run profitable businesses”. We accomplish our vision through business training boot camps and seminars, one-on-one consulting and educational materials (i.e., software, brochures, manuals, newsletters, CD’s and DVD’s). In 1992, Tom developed a customized labor pricing and cash flow budgeting software program for the trade’s industry. We are also the founders of the subscription CD and web-based series called the “Service Contractor’s Business Presentation of the Month” (for owners and managers). Grandy & Associates also writes articles for numerous trade publications including News, Contracting Business, HVAC Insider and monthly articles in the Sweeping, Reeves Journal, RSES Journal and Contracting Canada. Tom also routinely presents at national and state conventions for Aquatech, Florida Pool and Spa Association, International Pool and Spa Expo, ACCA, PHCC, QSC, MCA, SMACNA plus Comfortech. In addition to trade associations, Grandy & Associates does extensive business-training for contractors through wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers across the country including many national franchises.

Bill Kinnard

Bill Kinnard has 22 years experience in HVAC Sales, Service Management, Sales Management and Customer Service. He has worked with companies both large and small and has a unique ability to connect with people. An individual with a real passion for teaching contractors to better understand their businesses and help their employees become superior performers.

Bill has been recognized for “Best Practices” by Carrier Corporation for technical and customer service training. He has conducted over 10,000 student hours of technical training and over 2500 student hours of customer service training. As a result of his unique style and professionalism, Bill was awarded the Richard Theoret Training Excellence Award in 1993. He was the youngest trainer to ever receive this distinguished recognition.

From 1988-1994, Bill served as Chairman of an ad hoc advisory committee for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for the purpose of creating a two-year Associate Degree Program in Heating and Cooling. Upon completion of the program development in 1994, Bill was reelected to serve as Chairman for another six years of the official, state-approved Associate Degree Program’s HVAC Advisory Committee for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

Bill is a licensed trainer for Grandy & Associates—an industry leader in business training—with a mission of teaching contractors how to run profitable businesses. Together he and Tom Grandy feature the Basic Business Boot Camp utilizing the Labor Pricing for a Profit software, ProfitMaxx software for tracking service technicians’ efficiency and productivity and Service Manager’s University utilizing the ProfitMaxx software. He is also a Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst (CPBA), Certified Professional Values Analyst (CPVA) and TriMetrix Certified (CTRI).

Bill served as church council Vice President for Christ Community Lutheran Church from 1994-1995 and was again elected to the council in 2004. He also co-directed the congregation’s first capital campaign for the completion of their new church home.

Bill is married to his best friend, Pam. Together they live in Green Bay, WI with their two daughters, Courtney and Rachel.

Course Description:

The “Basic Business Boot Camp” is an amazing program that is guaranteed to increase your profitability. Over the three days we cover everything it takes to run your company from the “business side” of the business. We cover labor pricing, cash flow, cash flow budgeting, what to track and how to track it. We spend several hours on maintenance agreements and collections and provide enough tax tips to pay for your trip several times over. The heart of the three days involves modeling your company on our computer software. You will model your company, by department, using your information (list of what to bring is provided). Once modeled you will know:

  • What is making money and what is not
  • What hourly rates must be charged in each department in order to cover your costs while still making a reasonable profit. You will also know each departments breakeven rate
  • You will have created a month-by-month, department-by-department cash flow budget for each department and the company as a whole
  • How to price residential and commercial maintenance agreements, based on your costs of doing business
  • You will know what internal hourly rate to use if you go to flat rate pricing (if is different than your time and material rate!)
  • Best of all you will make copies of your model and begin the “what if” process of maximizing your profitability (what if we added a tech or office person, bought a new vehicle, changed an overhead cost or marked our materials up another 3% to 5%). Make the changes and you will instantly know how those proposed changes will affect your hourly rate, cash flow and profitability.
